Kakadu National Park closed two of its top attractions entirely this year – now a $70 million road overhaul has delivered its first completed upgrade.

Kubara Rd is now officially open for use, providing safer and more weather-resilient access to the stunning Kubara pools and Nanguluwurr art site walks near Burrungkuy (Nourlangie).

Works realigned and upgraded a section of Kubara Road into a six-metre-wide gravel road.

The road formation was also raised, and a new culvert and concrete floodway was installed to improve flood immunity.

The federal government’s $70m investment is also funding upgrades to other key tourism links in the national park – including Jim Jim Falls Rd.

The works will upgrade 20km of Jim Jim Falls Road in two sections to improve access to Jim Jim and Twin Falls.

NT civil engineering company – also won a $8.1m contract to upgrade and seal a 6.6km section of Maguk Rd and realign the day-use track to provide better access to Maguk.

Those works started in May and are expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

A $22.6m contract to upgrade 5km of Gimbat Rd and 6.4km of Gunlom Rd to improve flood immunity has been awarded to Black Cat Civil, also set to be delivered by the end of next year.
